A very Happy Birthday to my dear Mr. Createology. Today is his special day. We will be celebrating at one of our favorite local restaurants tonight for dinner. As for projects...Mr. C wanted some new specialty car towels so he researched and this is what we did. Bought the nicest thickest plushest towels I have ever seen or touched. Of course in white! Next as you see in the photo above we cut them apart. Why? Because there can be NO banding or edging to impair the surface of the towel or cause any roughness or drag. So we cut the towels apart. Have you ever cut up a super thick plush towel? The "lint" is overwhelming and covers every surface...me, him, the cutting table, the floors, the carpet. What a mess. 
This is just a small bit of the mess on the carpet in the sewing room. Looks like it snowed. :o) 
Next we sew the cut towels. With a special cotton thread in white. No other blends or types will do for these car towels. Only cotton or the thread might scratch the car's surface. I merely zig-zagged the edges to control the amount of raveling that might occur. Then a nice clean run through the washer and dryer to remove any contaminants that the towels might contain. NO softner in the towels as that will hamper the ability to dry and buff. Alrighty then! 
Now we have the new "required" car towels for Mr. C. One large bath towel minus all edging and borders cut in half and one cut in thirds. Special sizes for each special task. Happy Birthday Mr. C.
P.S. I am still sweeping and vacuuming debris. This is one project I am glad to have finished.

Now that is what I call "One Nice Wife". A gift that he will use and like. The strangest thing I have ever made was a costume for "Into The Woods" my daughter was Little Red. The cape was red on one side and the other side was grey with a stuffed wolf's head attached! Then there were the 20 ganster munchkin costumes for "The Wiz".....oh, the theatre days.

ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday Mr. C! My rooster has me modify his overalls and then he also has aprons to carry all his parapharnalia and to somewhat protect the overalls. He wanted to know if I could stitch his boot the other day. Maybe Nina could but she is too cute for that. :D

ReplyDeleteHmm, well two of the most unusual sewing projects have to do with autos as well. The first was when my dad asked me to sew a new cover for the seat of his dragster. I cut off the old one and made a pattern then used some bright orange pleather for the seat. Oh, plus some bright orange to make contrast piping.
And the second was when my husband asked me to sew his arm restraints to his racing suit. (It's easier if part of it is attached to the suit and then he just hooks the second part to them and the belts when he's strapped in the car.) :-)
Oops, it was bright blue contrast, not orange. :-)
ReplyDeletehehe, boys and their toys! And they think WE'RE fickle :) Makes me giggle. I had to do a similar project for my dad's new car. He plays tennis a lot, didn't want to sweat on his new seats (of course). He wanted seat covers but they had to be 100% cotton to be absorbent and not "slippery or slimey" when damp. So I made seat covers out of bath sheets for him.

ReplyDeleteOh gosh I've made alot of wierd things in my days, seat covers for my sons truck, lots of Hallween costumes but the hardest one to figure out was a duck bag for my hubbys decoys,no pattern... a square flat bottom bag with heavy straps for carrying , seprate compartments for each duck, so the paint won't rub off. it holds 2 dozen ducks and he loves it,he would like another one. NOT A CHANCE !!!! LOL

Don't forget to wash them about 6 times before using on a car, especially a dark car...ask me how I know.:-) I've been buying those yellow absorbing towels and they are like chamois cloth. Wonderful! They also sell them in the pet department to quickly dry your pet after a bath. Just an idea..Happy birthday to Mr.C!

ReplyDeleteMy most interesting thing I have ever worked on involves my husband and a car too...
In the second year of our marriage we lived on a lake in the Yukon, NO amenities and wood heat so we had flannel sheets on the bed (I do love central heating now!). One night as I stretched out in bed my foot felt the scratchy blanket instead of the sheet - must have come untucked, I thought. I got up to tuck it back in only to discover a large chunk cut out of the corner of our new flannel sheets. "What the heck?"
I looked at M. who looked right back at me and said "I washed the car and didn't have a shamee", as if cutting off a corner of the bedsheet was the most natural thing in the world.
So I was faced with either patching the sheet (it was brand new) or cutting it up to make more. Patching didn't work so I whacked it!
Oh - and a very Happy Birthday Mr. C!
