Eating Healthier...

About three years ago I made a concious decision to eat healthier than I currently was doing.  I am known to eat far too many carbs and pounds of sugar in every form possible.  Since Diabetes runs strongly in my family I always believed I was destined to get it and therefore I would joke that when that day came I would have at least earned it by eating so much sugar.  When I made my decision to change how I was eating I no longer thought it even remotely funny that I would some day become diabetec.  I decided I am in control and I do have the power to be healthier than I might have once thought.
I am happy to say that I have a clean slate of health, and I have much more energy and stamina these days.  I follow Weight Watchers program and like to attend the weekly meetings when possible.  I did reduce my weight and am continuing to focus on what I eat and how to get exercise without exercising.  I just bought this new cookbook and will be trying at least one new recipe every week.  I am not one to spend a lot of time in the kitchen...unless I am gluing and glittering projects on the table I shouldn't be working on.  Bahahaha :o)
Because I still prefer sweet over savory flavors I will be trying this fruit salsa with cinnamon pita chips that I found on Pinterest.  Fresh or frozen fruit is a wonderful food to eat any time.

I also found this on Pinterest...I am afraid I am getting addicted...and definitely will be trying this idea.  I do not like to pack a lunch and never have liked it since grade school when I had to make lunches for me and my two younger sisters everyday.  This salad in a jar is brilliant and even if I am at home it will be so easy to get the jar and place a beautiful salad bowl on top and turn it over.  Perfectly dressed salad that easily.  You can even do this a couple days in advance as long as the dressing/liquid is on the bottom layer of the jar and the lettuce is at the top of the jar.  No more excuses about how time involved it is to make salad if you do this and make three at a time instead of just one.
May you each have a wonderful week ahead and eat healthy...for yourselves!
I have been busy but will share later as I don't have my camera program on this borrowed computer in order to show any photos.  Another reason I am so happy to view Pinterest and find great photos to share.
Happy Healthy Hugs...

  1. The fruit salsa is sooo good! Only make up what you are going to eat at that time for the fruit salsa. It gets really soupy after a couple of hours. I also don't necessarily think you need to chop the fruit up into super small pieces. And only add sugar if you really need it. The lemon juice does help it not turn so brown. I have had it with fresh strawberries, kiwi, and pineapple. It was great! Another time I used blackberries... Kind of a messy fail! It was almost a dark purple color! Have fun! ;)

  3. I too have decided to give up the sugar and starches. I feel much better and lost a little weight. The weight loss is just a plus because the feeling better is well worth giving the sugar bowl a toss!
    Keep it up!

  4. I am right now in the same place you were 3 years ago. My intake is ridiculous. I eat so unhealthy it is not funny. My dad is diabetic and my mom is too. Actually she is because of her weight. I did start this year saying that I would try to eat healthier. But I have a serious problem. I do not like vegetables nor fruits. I only eat potatoes (occasionally) and in the fruit department I like apples (peeled of course) LOL, watermelon and bananas. I need serious help. But I am trying to stay off the sweets and carbs. Oh, and I rarely drink water. I only drink diet coke all day.
I need some prayer for my health. the funny thing is that I am healthy. All my labs come back fine.
I have thought of weight watchers for a while now, but I am afraid I will not like any of there founds. But I guess if I don't ry it I will never know.
    Thanks for the encouragement.
Hope you have a great week ahead.

  5. OMG.. all I can say is when I read what you wrote it is as 'if" I had written that! My Mother and 2 brothers have type 2 diabetes, caused by gainging weight.
Well, Mom had nine kids.! lol
I was skinny.. Not medium, but under weight and was laughed at my entire life til I turned 40. Then I became medium, Now I became LARGE!! I have my treadmill up stairs in the living rm, and I am also starting pilates tape. It is supppose to be wonderful. Along with that. I found the South Beach Diet to be wonderful and much more practical then any other. I have lost 20 lbs in 5 wks. Drink lots of water, tread mill, eat healthy, and keep moving. I can't wait for the day I can look in the mirror and smile at myself.
As of now I am a "mangoed mess'!

  12. Hello My Friend, Well Congrats on your road to good health and all that you accomplished by a healthier lifestyle. It is an encouragment to all.
I love the salad idea and will be doing this for sure. I love salads and make them most everyday, but to make several ahead like this is great for busy times. I also found a no calorie dressing from our garden market (Sprouts) that I use and it saves lots of calories on a healthy salad. It is by Walden Farms if you ever see that brand. It comes in bottles and also packets that you can carry in your purse when out for lunch or dinner.

Thank you for stopping by. Have a great weekend.

  15. The year before I turned 40, I decided that I wanted to be fit and forty not FAT and forty. I was inspired by Oprah's Boot Camp so got two other friends to join with me in exercising and making positive changes in our eating habits. We worked out as often as we could at a friend's house where she had a treadmill and a big area for excercising -- we did Jane Fonda aerobics, Cathy Smith weights, Billy Blanks Tae Bo, Pilates, Cindy Crawford workouts ... we really mixed it up and would walk also. The bonus was that after 6 weeks, we would all strip down, measure ourselves and weigh in and whomever lost the most, would get treated out to lunch by the others and would receive gifts. I am proud to say that I won 3 times and they each won one time. I lost 25 lbs and have kept it off. My eating changed drastically and is with me to this day. My dad had quadruple bypass surgery when he was 45 years old and all his brothers and sisters had heart disease and died from heart conditions. I will be 46 next month and my recent blood tests showed that cholesterol, sugar, etc is in the normal range. I may not be as toned as I used to be (after spraining my ankle and not being able to walk) but I have kept the weight off and feel so much better because of that. We all have the power to take control of our lives and our health. Congrats to you for doing just that. (As you can see, I could write a book on how I feel about it. HA!) Happy Friday! Tammy

  16. I am actually more of a savory lover than sweet, but cheese & chips are no better than sugar so Weight Watchers has kept me in line for years now. I LOVE this salad idea. So logical to just keep the lettuce away from the dressing so it doesnt't sog up. Just joined pinterest. will have to find you there Sherry!!!
