Sorting & Organizing Fabrics...

Now that new carpet is completed I can put my sewing room back together and hopefully sew soon.  I am not a fan of the new beige carpet however the choice was made with resale in mind.  I already dropped a pin and spent five minutes finding it.  I personally would not have carpet in a sewing room however this is technically a bedroom.

Mr. C having seen my supplies has determined I need to purge my fabrics due to the fact that I will never use them all.  Because he is right (he is always right) I decided to sort and organize my fabrics a little differently this time.  Here you can see the shelving units which hold my fabrics in the closet.  How can I possibly eliminate fabric when I love them all.  Hmmm...I decided that all fabrics which are too thick for my machine to sew would be good to pass along.  After all my sewing machine has just returned from a long stay at the repair shop.

This was a very time consuming project and partly how I abused my back.  I went through each and every category of fabric and selected just the ones that I would be keeping.  Then just those got to go back on each labeled shelf.  Shhh...we won't discuss all the fabrics that are in tubs currently stacked under a desk and table in the studio.  I figure those weren't part of the shelving overload that Mr. C encountered when we moved things for the carpet installation.  I will deal with them another time.

So after days of sorting and purging I have a pretty good sized stack of fabrics that will be leaving my room.  Right now they are stacked on the sofa bed in the sewing room as I honestly have no other place to put them.  They are too heavy to lift and they are too heavy to mail.  I am thinking of donating them to a local group here.  Now my shelves are not groaning and I can easily see all that I have to work with.  The good news is that I found a lot more fabric for sewing dresses for Dress a Girl Around the World.
Thank each of you for your well wishes for my health.  It has taken a few weeks but I am finally feeling ever so much better.  My voice has returned...much to Mr. C's dislike (I am always too loud for him).  My strength is returning and my leg and back are trying to get better.  I have rested and taken all my meds.  Yesterday I ventured outside to water my Wooley Thyme and that was enough exertion for me.  Our weather has been glorious but dry.  This week we are to return to triple digit heat and still no rain in any forecast.  Fall is in the air as the nights and mornings are much cooler.  I saw acorns that have fallen to the ground and lots of oak leaves dropping.  September is marching right along.  I am enjoying your blogs and seeing lots of creative fall décor, custom pumpkins and wreaths that you are making.  I won't be decorating for fall this year.  My daughter and granddaughters are already decorating for her epic Halloween party.  This will be her third year in a row and she picks a theme and then goes all out over her entire home and grounds.  I am thankful I am not able to attend...I don't do scary or spooky or blood-curdling!
I just want to say how very grateful I am for being able to live here in America and have all the spoils of life that I am very thankful for.  My heart breaks for those less fortunate around the world.  God Bless America.  I am so grateful for all the years I was able to "labor" and work for my living.

  1. I know all about the 'joys' of having carpet in a sewing space. I'm stuck with it here (apartment rules) and I hate it. It sucks up pins and dropped needles and threads and I spend altogether too much time on my hands and knees hunting for something I've dropped. Glad to hear you're feeling better and having an organized sewing space will, I'm sure, help you feel better too. We hope for rain for you.

  4. so good to read you are feeling a lot better and able to do a bit more. Just be a good girl and do not overdo things.
I sew in the kitchen and it is great having a tiled floor, just sweep in when I finish which has to be done every day, it is a bind having to put things away but means I keep the place reasonable tidy.
I suspect we all have more fabric than we can ever use, a group I am sure will be very grateful of your stash you have to give away giving them an even bigger stash

Like you here in UK we are blessed when I see what is happening, so many thousands losing their lives trying to escape to a better pace to live, and the refugee camps in France I pray peace can come to the world soon and we can all live together happily

  7. Glad to hear you're on the mend! I hope you can find a good home for the fabrics you've decided you can't use. Sounds as though you suffer from SELE - stash exceeds life expectancy! It is easier to work when the stash is sorted and clear.

  8. I prefer a hard surface floor for my sewing space as well. That's a lot of organizing! I'm glad I don't know how much fabric I've given away over the years. I try to stay out of the fabrics stores... there's just too much temptation! Get well soon, dear friend.

  9. Several years ago I purged my fabric stash, giving away all that was left from my "craft show sales" days. I still have quite a stash that I have decided that I will try to use making pillow cases. Glad you feel better. I have burgundy carpet in my sewing room (whcih used to be my daughter's bedroom). I have lost numberous beads and pins in it. I have changed my mindset about it. After a quick search, I let the vacuum have it.

  10. always hard to go through our stash of crafty items-but I feel better when I find good homes for them, there always seems to be charities for making love quilts too. my hubby picked me up a little magnet that is at the end of long piece of metal that can be pushed in small for storage-I love it for finding needles and pins as I am always dropping them it seems.
glad to read you are on the mends-my heart goes to all those thousands of immigrants looking for a better life away from war so thankful Germany and others are helping

  11. Well, I love carpeting and especially in my crafty/sewing space. Just stop dropping your pins, girls! I know, I know, easier said than done! But I have a beautiful antique persian carpet, so the pins are easily found. Not so easy when dropping a tiny bead though. LoL Your new sewing room is beautiful! What a joy to be getting it all organized. It's always good to out-with-the-old. From the looks of your lovely pile, a local group with give those fabrics some all new love. Bless your generous heart Sherry.

  12. I am so glad you are feeling physically better and I bet fetting your sewing room organized and back to a happy sewing place is a terrific feeling. Darn hubbies are mostly always right, aren't they! lol

  13. Congratulations on getting things sorted, bad back and all. Good you are feeling better, too. Purging fabric- gasp, what a thought. But it does get out of control. For the carpet, could you use one of those flat, large plastic mats like are used in office work spaces so the chairs roll easily over carpeted surfaces? Protect it and make it more sewer-friendly at the same time? A thought.

  14. I'm so glad you are feeling better!! I need to do the same thing to my craft room but instead of fabric, my weakness is paper. It's taking over!! I have shelves and shelves and shelves and drawers full, yet I keep buying more!! I seriously need a 12 step paper addiction intervention!! Still praying for rain for you. Have a great day :)

  15. Well good to know there's someone else that's more a fabric hoarder than me! Are you planning on reselling your house? I stopped doing for other people as far as resell a long time ago because I bought the house for me. Buyers will do what they want anyway. I tore out my carpet I put in last year (I know, almost new) and installed Pergo laminate cause I got sick of vacuuming up dog hair etc. And keep those tubs hidden! LOL!

  16. Sherry it's a lot of work, but the results are great in having your space back in order again. Now you can get to creating again.

  17. So glad you are feeling better!!! Glad you didn't totally reinjure yourself by all that purging! Do I really need to do that again!!!

  18. Hi Sherry, Getting organized with our stuff is the best accomplishment. Hats off to you and all you got completed.
I always love to purge and get things straight in my studio too and mine needs it again as well.

So glad your back is better. Take care not to over do it and have a set back. No pun intended.
Sure hope you get that much needed rain soon.
    Prayers for you.
    Hugs, cm

  19. We all have so much more than we need. I am really trying to work on using what I have. Now that I'm not working, can't spend as freely as I used to. Sorry to hear that all the sorting did you in. But it's good to know what you have and be able to create from it and pass on what you can't use. Our morning temps have been in the 80s which normally would feel very nice, but the extra high humidity makes it pretty miserable. A monstrous sand storm in surrounding countries yesterday. My girlfriend's school in Lebanon was cancelled because of the dust and the fact that they don't have a/c there -- just too expensive and electrical cuts every single day. Most of us are blessed beyond measure while so many suffer. We must be grateful for all that we have.

  20. Hi Sherry, Glad to hear that you are feeling better. That is always a good thing. Glad you were able to purge and organize your room so that you could get right back to what you love to do. SEWING. So envious. Don't I wish I could sew. I would be making dresses and so many cute things for my niece's baby. She is 4 months old and I am enjoying watching her while mom goes to work 2 to 3 days a week. Forgot how much fun they could be, but also how much work they are, especially now that I am much older. LOL.
Can't wait to see your new creations now that you have your sewing machine back.
Our weather has been in the 90's but feel like the 100's. Very hit, humid and wet everyday. YUCK. You walk outside and feel like you are going to melt and can't breathe.
Hope some of our rain, well a lot of our rain, moves on to your side of town.
    Happy crafting, Ana

  21. Seems like I am always purging fabric, that seems to regenerate under it's own strange power! As for pins, I just purchased some really cool quilting ones with Glow In The Dark heads...I figured if I drop one in the carpet, I can hit it with the light I use for scorpions at night, and find it...at least in theory. I try to be very careful with the carpeting, but they do end up there. Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better!!! XOXO

  23. Hello dear friend, I`m sorry you have been that bad, and feeling ill, and hope you will soon have more energy to both work in your garden and create in your newly cleaned out studio. With the shelves only filled with what you love, ....plus what you did hide under the table and desk, LOL- you are now able to start with fresh findings of forgotten beautiful materilas !! Dear Sherry I so hope my gift for you, will soon be with you, I don`t understand it takes so long !!! I wish you to fully recover very quickly, and hope for a lovely rest of the week !! I`M home again since yesterday, after helping my daughter paint and pack !!

  24. I was not aware you had not been feeling well and send positive thoughts your way for your continued healing! It is no fun being sick or struggling daily. Purging - oh I have that on my mind as well...just getting the energy to do it is another thing. I like your start on your studio. I understand about the pins, sometimes my brother would find them and I SWEAR he placed them on the floor on purpose! LOL

  26. Oh Sherry! I am so sorry to hear you haven't been well! I read several of your awesome blog posts and see you have been through the wringer health wise lately! I am so happy to hear you are on the mend!!
As for the fabric, you crack me up!! I know Mr. C is a wonderful man but I also know from you that he HATES clutter! Even things that aren't in front of him (like the fabric) will drive him crazy! But, doesn't he know if you give away that fabric, it only leaves room for you to buy more??? LOL!!!
Be well my friend! Huge healing hugs!!

  27. Your studio is absolutely wonderful. So organized and gorgeous. I am so happy that you are feeling so much better. I am having good days and some really bad days with my hip and leg. But the PT exercises help a lot.
As far as Mr. C goes be gentle he can't help it. Men just to understand....about the need for fabric. HA!
I too am with you about loving to be in America. I feel for all that are suffering around the world.I am so happy to have the opportunity to learn, work and live the life I have . Take care and don't overdue.
